About

Do you see the world as a place that sparks all kinds of creative thought, possibility and inspiration? The forward-thinking Visual Communication Design program from Champlain College offers designers of tomorrow broad exposure to the concepts and skills needed to become creative problem-solvers.

Overview

True to its mission of bridging tradition and innovation, this program offers students a unique blend of fundamental art and design principles, comprehensive liberal arts studies and active practice in emerging technologies, all connected to current trends in the profession. You will explore a wide spectrum of design projects and set yourself up for future success: employers typically expect qualified junior designers to graduate with a BFA. By the time you graduate, you'll have completed a professional-level design portfolio of your creative works and had it rigorously and individually critiqued by a panel of guest designers from top design firms and in-house corporate design centers.

NASAD Accredited

The Visual Communication Design program from Champlain College is accredited by NASAD, the national accrediting agency for art and design, and art and design-related disciplines. Institutional membership into NASAD is gained only through a peer-review process. Founded in 1944, NASAD establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees, provides professional development for leaders of art and design schools, and engages in policy analysis. Champlain College is among NASAD's 360+ institutional members nationwide, including New England's Rhode Island School of Design, Massachusetts College of Art, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Upside-Down Curriculum

At Champlain, there's no waiting to jump into your design courses. You'll take classes such as Form & Color and The Digital Image in your first year and continue to develop your design skills as you continue through the curriculum. This gives you the tremendous advantage of gaining hands-on knowledge about your major from the start, and will leave you well prepared for employment upon graduation.

Internships

Gain invaluable experience through design internships at leading local companies including Burlington City Arts, Clutch Creative, Driven Studio and Four Nine Design or through our Emergent Media Center (EMC) and the Center for Publishing (CFP), where you can work alongside students from other disciplines to complete design projects for real clients.

Portfolio Review

By graduation, you'll have completed a professional-level design portfolio rigorously critiqued by a panel of guest designers from top design firms and in-house corporate design centers.

AIGA

Get involved in our student-run AIGA chapter, where you'll meet guest speakers from companies in the industry, network with local professionals and enter AIGA design competitions.

Career Success

Visual Communication Design majors graduate with the critical competencies needed for success, and the results are outstanding year after year. In fact, 87% of the graduates from the Class of 2016 who are employed within six months of graduating are in positions relevant to their career goals.
