Chatham University offers both B.A. and B.S. degrees in Physics in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Students of the Physics programme offered by the Chatham University take first-year writing courses, curriculum distribution (core) courses, chemistry courses, mathematics courses, and beginning physics courses at Chatham.

Ten upper-division physics courses must be taken at CMU, through a special cross-registration agreement. Students also may choose to seek certification in physics teaching at the secondary level by completing the appropriate courses in the education department at Chatham.

  • Completed online application for admission via The Common Application.
  • Admissions essay or personal statement.
  • All official secondary and postsecondary transcripts, mark sheets or records. Original transcripts and official English translations are required for non-English institutions.
  • SAT and ACT scores (optional).
  • One letter of recommendation.
  • Copy of passport photo page (with identification information).
  • Copy of immigration documents (if currently living in the United States).
  • Proof of financial support (official bank statement, signed bank letter, or financial guarantee indicating enough funds to cover the first year of education at Chatham).

Grants are available from sources on and off campus to help undergraduates explore opportunities associated with the disciplines of science and mathematics. 

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

  • In addition to the support provided by the Hulme fund, Chatham annually awards money for a few students in science program to work with a Chatham faculty member on his or her research each summer for 10 weeks. The number of positions varies each year.
