Course Overview

You’ll work closely with BBC South West in Plymouth alongside other industry guests from Match of the Day, ITV West Country, The Guardian, regional and national freelancers, film-makers and broadcasters.

And from 2019 you will be doing it in our brand-new broadcasting hub, right next door to the BBC in Plymouth as we move into their former TV and radio studios. The Journalism (Sport Journalism) (Hons) degree offered by Plymouth Marjon University is a really exciting opportunity for our students to get hands-on guidance and learn skills from the wealth of experienced journalists and editors just a few steps away inside Broadcasting House. The studios in Seymour Road were home to the BBC from 1939 until a couple of years ago, but we’ll be bringing them bang up to date with the latest TV broadcast and radio streaming kit. There are opportunities for work experience and the chance to pitch stories to BBC editors on a regular basis.

Your lecturers are a mix of experienced academics within journalism and media, and current sports and news journalists. We also have regular input from journalists across the industry, so you'll learn your craft from people who are doing it every day. Our Sports Journalism students are currently working with all the major regional sports teams and media outlets, from match commentary, to filming and editing live footage, writing match previews and reports, and producing multi-platform content.

What might you become?

We have a long list of graduates who have gone on to work in the media departments at professional sports clubs, newspapers, magazines, national radio stations and websites, as well as in the sports PR and marketing industry. Roles held by recent graduates include Digital Content Manager at Huddersfield Town FC; Media Officer at West Bromwich Albion FC; Sports journalist Bath Chronicle; Sports Writer at Mid Glamorgan Press Agency and freelance sports journalist.
