Course Overview

Our state-of-the-art laboratory and world-class sports centre are each equipped with industry-standard gear, prepping you for real-life experience from day one. Because the course is designed in line with the UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) guidelines, our students enjoy extensive opportunities to pick up professional qualifications during their course, further enhancing their employability on completion.

This focused area of sport science support helps students understand the theories and science behind preparing an athlete for competition. Graduates will be well placed for a career in working with elite sports performers in the UK.

As part of the Strength and Conditioning (Honours) course offered by Plymouth Marjon University, students enjoy exciting opportunities to work with individual and team sport athletes, while being mentored by accredited coaches. Our state-of-the-art laboratory and conditioning facility includes a climatic chamber that will allow you to experience varying environmental conditions including altitude, extreme heat and cold.

What might you become?

The successful completion of the programme will give the graduate the skills necessary to work in a variety of careers including; strength and conditioning coach, fitness instructor and personal trainer. Some graduates go on to become strength and conditioning interns at professional level clubs such as Exeter City FC, Plymouth Argyle FC and Cornish Pirates RFC.

Others become high performance strength and conditioning specialists within the private gym sector. Students may also be able to progress on to MSc programmes in Strength and Conditioning or Sport and Health Sciences or may be eligible for MSc Physiotherapy or Sports Therapy (pre-registration) courses.

Admission requirements

  • Applicants must have three A-levels at grades CCC or above, BTEC triple grades MMM or above, or Access 23-45 D/M with min 6D and GCSE English Language at grade 4 or grade C or above.
A DBS check is required.In addition, preference will be given to applicants with the following:
  • Engagement in sport as a participant, coach, leader or volunteer
  • NGB awards
  • Leadership awards (such as JSLA, CSLA, HSLA)
  • Work experience in an appropriate sports environment
