Overview

During the Physics and Astronomy program at Saint Mary's College of California, you will sharpen your abilities to observe and interpret physical phenomena using synthesis, mathematical modeling and analysis, and you'll use the scientific method to understand and describe nature in its most elementary form. The department offers a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Arts, and a minor in physics.

Learning Outcomes

Students who graduate with a major in physics will be able to analyze complex and subtle physical phenomena and systems.

The successful student will be able to identify the physical and mathematical principles relevant to a system - even principles that are addressed in seperate courses and diciplines. Using the principles they identify, students will be able to carry out the necessary analysis and synthesis to model the system accurately, and will be able to effectively communicate their results.

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Original, official transcripts are required. If the transcript is not in English, a certified English translation is required.
  •  Any period of the four year high school record not reflected on the American high school transcript must be sent from all schools attended abroad.
  • Official college records are required for all students who have attended any post-secondary school; each college attended must be listed on the application for admission and official records must be provided from each institution attended.
