The Dance program at Saint Mary's College of California cultivates creativity, skill and artistry in a nurturing and supportive environment.  Students come to Saint Mary’s to dance because they have a passion for moving. Our noncompetitive atmosphere gives all dancers the opportunity to perform, even in their first year.

Overview

The Dance program at Saint Mary's College of California strives for a holistic approach to studying dance by:

  • emphasizing a healthy attitude toward dance
  • developing efficient movement patterns that promote a healthy body
  • encouraging reflection both of the practice and the spirit
  • assisting the dancer in taking ownership of growth and change
  • teaching healthy life-style choices including nutrition and injury prevention
  • exploring the dancing body in relationship to the SMC community, the greater dance community, and the world, thus placing dance within a larger context of ideas
  • requiring cross training of various dance styles and methods, including technique, technical theatre, Somatics, and world dance forms, in addition to recommending other disciplines within the performing arts
  • attending dance concerts of professional companies.
  • offering peer mentoring and one-to-one faculty mentoring
  • supporting individual artistic choices to express individual thought, choreography, and research to further develop creative and critical thinking
  • creating professionally trained dancers in a rigorous and positive environment

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Original, official transcripts are required. If the transcript is not in English, a certified English translation is required.
  •  Any period of the four year high school record not reflected on the American high school transcript must be sent from all schools attended abroad.
  • Official college records are required for all students who have attended any post-secondary school; each college attended must be listed on the application for admission and official records must be provided from each institution attended.
