Arabic has been termed a critical language by the federal government and opens a wide range of educational and employment possibilities for its students. Wofford employs a communicative approach in Arabic language pedagogy and teaches students formal Modern Standard Arabic, which is used in literature and media, as well as other dialects of Arabic, mainly Moroccan, Masri and Shami Arabic.

Overview

The MENA program offers first-, second- and third-year Arabic. The first-year course meets five days a week, the second-year course meets four days a week, and the third- year course meets 3 days a week. These courses will be available to the general public and to students at other local and regional campuses as well as to Wofford students, providing a resource for the community at large.  

Wofford students have opportunities to study and to conduct internships in the Arab world through Wofford’s foreign study service providers, which include the Council for International Education Exchange (CIEE), the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) and the School for International Training (SIT).     The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120. Read more about TOEFL iBT ®.

General Requirements

  • Complete the  Common Application, including the Wofford College member page.
  • Submit the School Report form and your high school transcript(s).
  • Submit your official test scores.
  • The TOEFL (minimum score 90) or IELTS (minimum score 7) is required for all applicants whose native language is not English. If a minimum score is not met, a recorded or scored interview may be taken into consideration. We are happy to recommend  Initial View, ACTFL OPIc, and Vericant. 
  • The SAT or ACT is a requirement for native English speakers. SAT or ACT scores are expected from all international applicants unless students are unable to reach a testing center.Submit completed  Financial Certification for International Students.
