The programme

The Social Studies Education offered by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore major must complete 129 semester hours of University courses.  Included in the 129 semester hours are a minimum of 34 hours of courses in professional development courses, 42 hours in social studies specialization courses, and 12 hours in the Teaching Internship.  Students must be admitted to into the Teacher Education Program which requires an overall grade point average of 2.75 and a passing score of the PRAXIS I test as set by the State of Maryland.

Required score: 2.75

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • A completed admissions application with a non-refundable $25.00 application fee in U.S. dollars. 
  • An official evaluation of all academic records (credential evaluation) from WES, ECE or AACRAO
  • Official scores to confirm English proficiency
  • An official copy of the test results from taking either the SAT I or ACT.
  • A certificate of finance along with a bank statement bank or scholarship letter, no more than six months old, addressed to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore verifying the availability of funds to cover tuition, fees, and other direct costs associated with enrolling at the university.
