Overview

In  Italian Education from Youngstown State University (YSU) you'll develop the skills of a professional teacher and learn different methods for teaching a foreign language. You'll strengthen your abilities in speaking and writing Italian, while surveying Italian literature and absorbing the culture through contemporary texts. You'll have have the opportunity to study abroad in Italy.

Graduates with Italian Education from Youngstown State University (YSU) will:

  • develop an understanding and appreciation of the history and culture of those areas in which the target language is spoken.
  • be able to read and understand a variety of materials written in the target language. These materials may include but are not limited to: novels, plays, poetry, newspaper and magazine articles, and private correspondence (e.g., business communications).
  • be able to understand the target language when spoken in a variety of contexts. These contexts may include but are not limited to: conversation with another individual or individuals, formal lectures, song, and film.
  • be able to carry on a conversation and deliver a speech in the target language. The student will achieve a level of Advanced Low on the Oral Proficiency Interview administered by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
  • be able to compose in the target language a variety of written documents. These documents may include but are not limited to: formal and casual correspondence, essays, and creative works. The student will achieve a level of Advanced Low on the Writing Proficiency Test administered by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • A nonrefundable $45 (US) application fee. 
  • Applicants must have graduated from high school or have successfully completed the General Education Development (GED) test to be considered for admission. 
  • Submit a high school transcript and American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores.  
  • Applicants must have a high school grade point average of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 point scale, have an ACT composite score of 17 or higher, or a combined SAT score of 920 or higher from the evidence-base writing and reading test, and the math test to be admitted unconditionally.
  • Proof of English Proficiency.
  • Photocopy of passport page showing Photo, Name, Date of Birth, citizenship, etc.
  • Affidavit of Financial Support Form
  • Supporting Financial documents, e.g. bank statement.
