The Department of Art provides students with knowledge and understanding of art, professional training in art, opportunities to view traditional and contemporary modes of visual expression, and the chance to participate in competitive and professional activities.

Jackson State University’s location in the major metropolitan center of Mississippi provides unique opportunities for visual arts students.

  • Graphic Design students from  Jackson State University have access to advertising agencies, printers, and electronic and print media. During their senior year, graphic design students serve a semester-long internship that emphasizes learning through experience.
  • Similar opportunities are available for Art Studio majors.
  • The Mississippi Museum of Art and the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center, as well as numerous art galleries, are only blocks away.
  • Our Mac Lab in Johnson Hall is state-of-the-art. Drawing and painting studios are also in Johnson Hall.
  • Art History and Art Appreciation classes are taught in a “Smart Classroom” located in the College of Liberal Arts. This classroom is wired with the newest instructional technology in addition to traditional slide lecture equipment.

General Requirements

  • Application: A completed application
  • Transcripts: Prospective students should request that their high school send a transcript.  A six or seven semester transcript can be submitted for early review and a final official transcript submitted upon graduation which lists all high school course work, the date of graduation, grade point average, and class rank.
  • Test Scores:  Request that an official ACT or SAT score(s) is sent to Jackson State University.
  • Immunization Record: All students born after December 31, 1956 must submit proof of immunization compliance for measles, mumps, and rubella.
