Overview
Characteristics
The Electronic and Information Engineering (Honours) programme of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University emphasises both theory and applications in learning and teaching. The curriculum includes
- lectures, projects
- presentations
- laboratory exercises and various industry placement opportunities.
After completing the fundamental subjects in Years One and Two, students choose their professional development specialism by selecting subjects in four different areas in Years Three and Four. The four areas of specialism are
- circuits and systems,
- telecommunication and mobile,
- information security, and
- information technology and multimedia.
Students may also engage in overseas exchange scheme and earn recognized credits in a university outside of Hong Kong for one semester during Year Three.
The programme also provides workplace training opportunities for students to gain work experience within and outside Hong Kong through work integrated education (WIE).
Professional Recognition
The programme has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and recognized by all signatories of the Washington Accord. Graduates of the programme will satisfy the academic requirements for Corporate membership of the HKIE.
Programme Structure
- Years One and Two: Students study a set of fundamental subjects in electronics, engineering science, programming, information technology, mathematics and communication skills.
- Year Three: Students study more advanced and specialized subjects in the areas of telecommunications, computers, data and computer communications, integrated circuits, control engineering, embedded systems and programming. Students have to complete an integrated project and a multi-disciplinary project over a duration of two semesters.
- Year Four: Students can choose from a list of technical elective subjects and complete a final-year design project to strengthen their technical knowledge and skills.

- For those who are applying on the basis of A-Level qualifications: E in 3 A-Level subjects OR E in 2 A-Level and 2 AS-Level subjects;
- For those who are applying on the basis of International Baccalaureate (IB): a minimum score of 24 with at least grade 4 in 2 Higher Level (HL) subjects;
- For those who are applying on the basis of other qualifications: an appropriate Diploma passed with credit or an appropriate Higher Certificate from a recognised institution; an appropriate Associate Degree / Higher Diploma from a recognised institution; holder of other non-local qualifications (please refer to our Guidelines on Non-local Qualifications for more details about our general requirements for such qualifications)
