The B.S. in family and consumer sciences is a strong interdisciplinary program which includes course work from a variety of areas. Approximately 69 semester hours are required in child and family development, consumer economics, nutrition, clothing/textiles and housing. A minor in human nutrition, health, human resource management, gerontology, or a specialization in youth issues, business/media or early intervention is included in the program. 

Family and Consumer Sciences is available to students pursuing Bachelor of Science degree in the Richard W. Riley of the College of Education at Winthrop University. This degree does not lead to teacher licensure but does prepare graduates for human and consumer service careers where children and families are the focus.

In family and consumer sciences, students have opportunities for internship placements at a variety of agencies, organizations, and corporations in North Carolina and South Carolina. Students complete at least 300 hours of work experience to fulfill the internship requirement.

General Requirements

  • High school performance, including grades and level of course work
  • Completion of high school course prerequisites as set by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education
  • Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT).  (Note that the results of the writing tests are not utilized when rendering an admission decision.) If you take the SAT more than once, we will use the highest Critical Reading and highest Mathematics score from all administrations.  If you take the ACT more than once, we will use the highest composite score.
