Overview

The Metallurgical Engineering program offered by South Dakota School of Mines & Technology offers you the possibility to study the processes that transform mineral resources and metals into useful materials that improve the quality of our lives. 

Students also work on compelling design projects on topics ranging from the development of a samurai sword to materials for NASA. And since three-fourths of all chemical elements are metals, you’ll produce the materials for virtually every other engineering field in existence.

Student Jobs and Co-ops

Through cooperative education (co-ops) and internships, School of Mines students have many opportunities to apply their education to "real world" work experiences. Students are employed by industry and government agencies in positions related to Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. Students may gain 1-3 hours of academic credit for their co-op or internship experience upon department approval.
