Overview

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of both the department and the requirements for preparing general science teachers, you will achieve general science certification. Your course study culminates in student teaching.

The Geoscience Department from Indiana University of Pennsylvania offers a program degree in Earth and Space Science Education and is traditionally a close-knit group, with students and faculty traveling together for coursework, research, and conferences, organizing academic and social events, and gathering weekly for an informal lunch seminar. 

The Geoscience Club offers departmental tutors, holds a biannual rock and mineral sale, and organizes trips to various lectures, museums, and locations of geological interest.

Society of Exploration Geophysicists Student Chapter

  • The Society of Exploration Geophysicists promotes the science of applied geophysics and the education of geophysicists. SEG fosters the expert and ethical practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of natural resources, in characterizing the near surface, and in mitigating earth hazards. 
  • SEG encourages its members to learn about the newest technologies by sponsoring speakers, publishing new theories in periodicals and other formats, and organizing continuing education classes around the world.

Programme Structure

  • The Geoscience Department is made up of eight full-time professors whose diverse specialties and backgrounds provide students with the expertise and scholarship they will need to develop into professional geoscientists.
  • Many professors collaborate with energy and environmental industries, for private companies as well as for government agencies. They all conduct rigorous research within their specialties, which include watershed management, deep ocean sediment, global climate change, earthquakes, paleontology, and even Mars.
