Overview

The Elementary Teacher Education Program at Bishop’s University is a two step program leading to two degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies and a Bachelor of Education. This combination of degrees is required in order to be eligible for a Quebec teaching permit or “brevet d’enseignement.”

This Mathematics and Secondary Education degree from Bishop’s University only certifies you to teach in the province of Quebec. If you are planning to teach in another province, it is your responsibility to contact the Ministry of Education in that province to see what additional courses are required to certify you to teach in their province.

Practicum

Students in the elementary and secondary education programs complete 700 hours of practice teaching over four practica in the School of Education. The practica are located at the English school boards and some private schools in Quebec. Placements are varied, giving student teachers knowledge about large and small schools, schools with special needs students, schools promoting the early acquisition of French, and adult education centres for students returning to complete schooling. Student practica are monitored and evaluated by associate teachers in the schools and by university supervisors.
