What You'll Study

The Biology program of Lock Haven University allows flexibility for you to gain the experience needed to reach you career goals. This track allows you to choose upper-level biology classes to tailor your interests and skill set while becoming competitive in the job market or when applying for graduate education. In addition to interesting coursework and dynamic experiences in the field, you will have the opportunity to engage in independent study research in collaboration with biology faculty. Topics covered include:

Research Opportunities: You will have opportunities to conduct research with biology faculty members on a variety of topics in the laboratory and field. Students often engage in Independent Study research projects with faculty with a variety of expertise. Examples of student research experiences include:
  • Effects of human impacts and contaminants on the environment
  • Behavioral ecology of vertebrates
  • Species diversity in a variety of habitats
  • Developmental biology
  • Cancer biology
  • Environmental microbiology
  • Effects and remediation/treatment of diseases caused by bacteria and fungi
  • Applying GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to environmental questions
  • Genomics and Bioinformatics.

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3.2

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.2 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Complete the online application.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $25.00 (twenty five dollars U.S.) must be paid.
  • Submit official, English-translated copies of all secondary course work completed, including subjects listed and marks earned, secondary school certificates, diplomas and examinations results from all secondary, post-secondary, and university and/or professional schools.
  • All non-native speakers of English must submit an official language score report. To be considered "official," the scores must be sent directly from the sending institution (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).
