About

The Product Design Engineering (Hons) programme offered by the University of Derby is underpinned by our thriving partnerships with manufacturers. Throughout, you will work on industry-sponsored assignments that will enhance your development as a designer. You will also build the full range of skills that employers regard as essential for a successful design professional today.

You will be inspired and motivated by the expertise of our lecturers, who themselves have ‘real world’ experience as designers working for manufacturing companies and as consultants.

From the second year of the BSc (Hons) Product Design Engineering, you can choose optional pathways in either sustainability or materials and manufacturing. This enables you to concentrate on the themes which interest you most and decide where your future career ambitions might lie.

As well as honing your design skills, you will have the chance to showcase your talent in exhibitions and competitions. Our students and graduates regularly win national prizes for their skill and ingenuity.

Careers

The success of our graduates has shown that there is a wealth of career opportunities available to product designers in the UK and abroad. This course will equip you with all the skills and knowledge you need to set out on a career where you can specialise in design for the manufacturing sector.

Accreditation

Students graduating from either our BA (Hons) Product Design or BSc will be recognized as a Registered Product Designer (RProdDes) by the IED. Product Designers having achieved an RProdDes accredited first degree now have a pathway to Chartership.
