What to Expect

The Art Studio program offered at University of South Carolina offers students the opportunity to choose from two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.). The B.A. is a well-rounded liberal arts major that offers a solid foundation in multiple types of art and is ideal for students interested in double majoring. The B.F.A. is a pre-professional degree that allows students to focus in one of our seven concentration areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture (3-D studies).

Programme Structure

All B.A. undergraduate students will:
  • explore the development of art, within their own and other cultures, from prehistory to the present.
  • critically analyze aspects of the design and art-making process and evaluate theories, philosophies and research in the practice of the studio arts. 
  • through their artwork, demonstrate their competency of aesthetic literacy. 
All B.F.A. undergraduate students will:
  • define and explain development of art, within their own and other cultures, from prehistory to the present.
  • critically analyze aspects of the design and art-making process and evaluate theories, philosophies and research in the practice of the studio arts.
  • through their artwork, demonstrate their competency of aesthetic literacy.
  • synthesize their learning from the curriculum into a final culminating experience within their chosen concentration.
  • have a solo exhibition of their creative research to be examined by the student’s major faculty.
