What to Expect

The Art Studio program at the University of South Carolina offers students the opportunity to choose from two undergraduate degrees: the Bachelor of Arts in Art Studio (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.). The B.A. is a well-rounded liberal arts major that offers a solid foundation in multiple types of art and is ideal for students interested in double majoring. The B.F.A. is a pre-professional degree that allows students to focus in one of our seven concentration areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture (3-D studies).

Programme Structure

All B.A. undergraduate students will
  • explore the development of art, within their own and other cultures, from prehistory to the present.
  • critically analyze aspects of the design and art-making process and evaluate theories, philosophies and research in the practice of the studio arts. 
  • through their artwork, demonstrate their competency of aesthetic literacy. 
All B.F.A. undergraduate students will
  • define and explain development of art, within their own and other cultures, from prehistory to the present.
  • critically analyze aspects of the design and art-making process and evaluate theories, philosophies and research in the practice of the studio arts.
  • through their artwork, demonstrate their competency of aesthetic literacy.
  • synthesize their learning from the curriculum into a final culminating experience within their chosen concentration.
  • have a solo exhibition of their creative research to be examined by the student’s major faculty.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.5

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
