The BFA degree program has options in art education, graphic design, and art studio with emphasis in either two-dimensional media or three-dimensional media. Each option is designed to provide the student with in-depth experience and knowledge in a variety of studio techniques, art theories and historical perspectives.


The graphic design option allows students to develop creative and technical skills in visual communication concepts and time-based media. The option has a selective admissions program for advancement to the junior and senior years.

General Requirements

  • Application for Admission
  • Official records (transcripts or mark sheets) beginning with secondary school. Transcripts must bear the seal and signature of the appropriate school official, and be accompanied by an official English translation if necessary. A minimum grade point average of a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. All transcripts become property of this University. Transfer students are strongly encouraged to submit course descriptions or syllabi as this information will greatly expedite the transfer process.
  • English Language Proficiency Requirement: Official TOEFL, IELTS, STEP EIKEN, Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or iTEP Academic Plus Examination mailed directly from the respective testing service. The school code for Eastern Illinois University is 1199. Test results are valid for two years only. Required scores are listed here. Please note, conditional admission is possible for students who have not met the English requirement.

  • Non-refundable application fee of $30.00 U.S. in the form of a check, certified check or money order made payable to Eastern Illinois University.
  • Technological Requirements

    An Apple laptop computer. For all Art majors the recommended minimum configured laptop is the MacBook Pro 15-inch with 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 16 GB memory, 512GB PCle-based Flash Storage, Intel Iris Pro Graphics, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory. Software requirements are: Microsoft Office (student edition) and the Adobe Creative Cloud Design; Standard (education version). Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Creative Cloud Design Standard Collection is strongly recommended for students interested in the Graphic Design option. Students accepted into the Graphic Design program beginning their junior year would be expected to subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud (education version) at that time.
