The course has been designed to train students in the full range of practical skills related to stage management, technical theatre and stagecraft. The tuition and supervision is given by an established team of experienced industry practitioners and has close collaboration with actors, designers and directors under professional working conditions.

The programme

From the first year of study there will be opportunities to gain significant practical experience of live production work within the College’s wide ranging performance and event programme. It also includes practical modules covering all of the skills required for employment as ASM, DSM, technician, lighting designer, sound designer and stage manager.

Advanced training in practical stage management skills are included from creating call sheets and rehearsal reports to the financial planning and scheduling of international tours. The course will also cover training in the design, rigging and operation of a wide range of theatre lighting and sound equipment.

There is access to state-of-the-art equipment such as Grand MA lighting desks, GDS Stage Management Systems, d&b speaker systems, Yamaha, and Roland digital sound equipment and Nomad computerised flying systems, the course also features practical stagecraft workshops focusing on safe working practices including use of flying and scenery rigging, scenery construction and access equipment.

During the course, students will have the opportunity to undertake professional work experience placements with external companies in the UK or abroad. This also includes the chance to undertake a work placement in the College’s venue at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Programme Structure

Undergraduate Stage Management and technical theatre training at RWCMD covers core technical skills, sound and lighting design, and the full range of stage management skills from creating call sheets and rehearsal reports to the financial planning and scheduling of international tours.

English Language Requirements

    The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

General Requirements

  • Applicants will be selected for interview on the basis of the information provided on the UCAS application form.
  • Candidates who are successful at interview are usually expected to gain a minimum of 240 UCAS Tariff points, or equivalent qualifications, prior to entry.
  • However, the minimum conditions attached to any offer of a place are based on individual applications/interviews, and will often be higher than the minimum requirements stated above.
  • The College may consider applications from people without formal qualifications if they have an exceptional level of practical ability and experience.
