The BS in Medical Laboratory Science has two areas of emphasis: clinical laboratory science and histotechnology. Clinical laboratory scientists are healthcare professionals educated in all aspects of clinical laboratory analysis, including test development, performance and evaluation. They may work in many areas, including clinical chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, immunology, clinical microbiology and molecular diagnostics.

Histotechnologists are integral to the success of the anatomic pathology department by performing routine and complex procedures to preserve and process tissue specimens for examination and diagnosis by a pathologist.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.5

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Must have at least a 2.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must meet English Proficiency or request conditional admission and complete an Intensive English Program (IEP) application.
  • Please be advised that some Engineering majors may reach capacity and therefore will be restricted from entry.
  • For direct admission to some colleges and majors, SAT or ACT scores are required and must be sent to WVU directly from the respective testing services. 
  • Qualified applicants may be interviewed by the Medical Laboratory Science Admissions Committee
  • Two Letters of Recommendation are required; at least one must be from a College Science Professor
