James Madison University is the only university in the state of Virginia to offer the Biophysical Chemistry major. This rigorous major allows the exceptional student to focus on a solid foundation in chemistry with a study of biological systems, emphasizing hands-on learning, and leading to a career in biochemistry, chemistry, medicine.

Students take foundational lecture and laboratory courses in all sub-disciplines of chemistry – analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical – as well as biology, calculus and physics. The major is capped by biophysical chemistry, a two semester sequence of laboratories and lecture.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from James Madison University offers the B.S. Biophysical Chemistry degree for a major in chemistry, with concentrations that meet the American Chemical Society Accredited Programs requirements for programs in biochemistry, materials chemistry and in chemistry/chemical education. In addition, the department offers a B.S. degree in biophysical chemistry. It also offers minors in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, and materials science.

The programs are designed to provide the theoretical and practical instruction in chemistry and related areas to prepare students for careers in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, dentistry, paramedical areas, forensic sciences, chemical engineering and other technology based areas. The department also recognizes its responsibility to provide courses for non-chemistry majors who need a basic understanding of the principles of chemistry either for their chosen major or their general education.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks to be a premier undergraduate department who is nationally recognized for preparing chemistry majors for graduate and professional schools and careers by engaging them in collaborative research. Further, the department plays a fundamental role in the education and development of students who major in other scientific disciplines, and exposing students from other majors to the importance and relevance of science as a way of knowing.  We are committed to excellence in teaching and research to ensure our students lead productive and meaningful lives.
