Environmental Science at PSU is the study of the interactions between society and the physical, chemical, ecological and biological processes that structure and maintain ecosystems.  The Environmental Science and Management program (formerly known as Environmental Science and Resources) offers two undergraduate tracks: Environmental Science and Environmental Studies.

The Environmental Science and Management program (formerly known as Environmental Science and Resources) offers two undergraduate tracks: Environmental Science and Environmental Studies. The Environmental Studies track focuses on resource management and policy with study in the natural sciences, social sciences, geography, and environmental policy. The Environmental Studies track is recommended for students who are interested in pursuing careers involving working in agencies or organizations that address problems in the environment.

Programme Structure

Environmental Science Core (28 credits) in the subjects of ecology, chemistry, environmental systems, and physical geography.
Foundation (32-34 credits) including the subjects of biology, chemistry, resource management, economics, and others.
Skills (20 credits) from a list of skills that includes quantitative analysis, visualization of spatial data, field methods and writing.
Topical Areas (16 credits, including 2 ESM courses and 2 Geography courses) in identified areas that include freshwater resource and management, forest resource and management, urban enrionment, ecology and conservation, environmental policy and land use, and nature and culture.

Academic Requirements

  • All admitted undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students on non-immigrant visas must satisfy the English language proficiency requirement before they can enroll in regular academic classes.
  • Minimum required official score, achieved within the last two years, on the International Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Portland State Institutional TOEFL, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, or the Pearson Test of English-Academic (PTE).
