Overview
Located in the historic Old Main building, the Photography program at Wayne State University is a component of the fine arts division in the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art & Art History.
We consider the photographic image as both language and craft. The language of the photography addresses how signifiers, symbols and metaphors are used to create meaning within the photographic frame. Through classes that address digital and analog skills, students learn how to use digital and film cameras, edit their images, and make digital and darkroom prints.
The goal of this program is to draw attention to the construction of the photographic image and how it produces meaning in order to teach students the necessary skills to produce their own meaningful images and participate responsibly in visual culture.
What makes this program unique?
The photography program at Wayne State specializes in the fluid transition between digital and film technologies. We have an array of digital and analog equipment to support the production of professional quality, large format prints both digitally and in the darkroom.
