Overview
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the Ethnic Studies program of the University of Colorado at Boulder, students will be able to:
- Critically examine how race and the inter-related categories of culture, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender, class, sexuality, religion and immigration status impact the lives of people locally, regionally, nationally and internationally
- Analyze how power and privilege function at the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, class, ability, nationality and colonialism
- Examine how colonial and imperial projects facilitate and perpetuate structural dispossession through racialization and juridical power, producing marginalized communities
- Learn about the histories, cultures and worldviews of marginalized communities (domestic and transnational)
- Understand how both intersectional and multidisciplinary approaches inform comparative work in our four core disciplines
Students will learn the following practical skills:
- Think critically about social disparities and use an intersectional epistemic frame to understand social justice and strategies for social liberation
- Use creative ways to engage with social issues and communicate complex ideas from the field of ethnic studies to academic and general audiences
- Develop a broader view of history from the margins in order to support a more nuanced understanding of the political landscape in the U.S. (and beyond)
- Make evidence-based written and oral arguments to address complex social problems, such as those sitting at the intersection of racism, classism, sexism and homophobia
