In addition, they can take classes in the area of Critical Sports Studies to fulfill the undergraduate certificate in critical sports studies.

Overview

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the Ethnic Studies program of the University of Colorado at Boulder, students will be able to:

  • Critically examine how race and the inter-related categories of culture, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender, class, sexuality, religion and immigration status impact the lives of people locally, regionally, nationally and internationally
  • Analyze how power and privilege function at the intersection of gender, sexuality, race, class, ability, nationality and colonialism
  • Examine how colonial and imperial projects facilitate and perpetuate structural dispossession through racialization and juridical power, producing marginalized communities
  • Learn about the histories, cultures and worldviews of marginalized communities (domestic and transnational)
  • Understand how both intersectional and multidisciplinary approaches inform comparative work in our four core disciplines

Students will learn the following practical skills:

  • Think critically about social disparities and use an intersectional epistemic frame to understand social justice and strategies for social liberation
  • Use creative ways to engage with social issues and communicate complex ideas from the field of ethnic studies to academic and general audiences
  • Develop a broader view of history from the margins in order to support a more nuanced understanding of the political landscape in the U.S. (and beyond)
  • Make evidence-based written and oral arguments to address complex social problems, such as those sitting at the intersection of racism, classism, sexism and homophobia
