Although this rigorous program primarily addresses Western classical music, it also incorporates the study of world music cultures in both their art and vernacular traditions, as well as more modern American traditions such as Jazz. Two undergraduate majors are offered: the bachelor of music, which especially develops the student’s attainment in performance, and the bachelor of arts, which cultivates greater breadth in the student’s academic achievement.

  • B.A.; B.M.; M.A. with emphases in composition, ethnomusicology, or performance practice. 
  • D.M.A. in music composition. 
  • Ph.D. in music with an emphasis in cross-cultural studies; and undergraduate minors in electronic music and jazz.
  • Electronic Music--The electronic music minor focuses on the study of creating music with the tools of modern technology. Provides instruction in advanced skills of audio production, sound synthesis, and computer-assisted composition.
  • Jazz--The jazz minor focuses on the study of the history, theory, and performance of jazz. 
  • Music Minor- The study of music theory & performance through lessons and ensembles.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.8

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.8 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • All transfer applicants, both international and domestic, are reviewed using the same application and selection process.
  • To be considered a junior-level transfer student, you must have completed the equivalent of 60 semester/90 quarter units of transferable collegiate/university coursework, including academic preparation in English and mathematics and preparation for your proposed major field of studies. You must have demonstrated academic success in your studies (a minimum grade point average of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale is required of nonresidents of California).
  • If you have attended international and U.S. colleges or universities, both your international and U.S. courses and grades will be considered.
