The BTh Theology degree at the Stellenbosch University is a three-year programme which trains students particularly as youth workers, service workers, counsellors and community workers

Key facts

The Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University, which offers the Theology programme at the Stellenbosch University, is an ecumenical faculty which provides academic training in Christian theology according to different confessional convictions and church traditions. The Faculty of Theology (established in 1963) developed out of the Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC), which was founded in 1859. The Faculty also trains ministers and youth workers, per agreement, for the DRC, Uniting Reformed Church (URC) in Southern Africa, the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA), the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA) and the Volkskerk.

The Faculty of Theology is one of the smallest faculties at the University. It is, however, a hospitable, energetic and creative faculty in which scientific theology is practised with integrity.

The academic offering, with Christian Reformed theology as point of departure, has been broadened with the incorporation of a Youth Work programme and the development of a new curriculum which offers a wide range of options for undergraduate students regarding teaching and research. The variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the Faculty accommodates students from various communities, churches and countries.

Why this programme?

  • Teaching and training, like research, are approached scientifically with Christian reformed theology as point of departure
  • Theoretical work is complemented by a practical, community oriented accent on social issues like HIV/aids, poverty, violence, human dignity, ecology and justice
  • The programme includes modules on the subjects Old Testament, New Testament, Systematic Theology, Ecclesiology, Practical Theology and Missiology
  • Students may choose to specialise in Youth Work
  • The programme is also offered as an extended degree programme. The modules of the first year are then spread over two years
