Overview

The Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology Option offered by New Jersey Institute of Technology. Our graduates typically have strengths in the analysis, applied design, development, implementation, or oversight of advanced mechanical systems and processes.

The MET program emphasizes hands-on experience and the use of state-of-the-art computer software in the fields of mechanical design, automatic controls, power generation, CAD/CAM, HVAC, and engineering sales. The program also provides a background in mathematics and science, which is sufficient to allow students to go on to graduate school, and also obtain a professional engineering license.

Program Educational Objectives

  • Our graduates will possess the strengths to obtain and advance in positions that require analysis, applied design, development, implementation, or oversight of mechanical systems and processes.
  • Our graduates will have the knowledge, problem solving ability, and hands-on skills to be successful in careers in the design, installation, manufacturing, testing, evaluation, technical sales, or maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Our graduates will have the foundation to take advantage of opportunities for life-long learning and professional development.

English Language Requirements

  • Minimum required score:

    79

The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

  • Minimum required score:

    6

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score:

    550

The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • All students who apply to NJIT must submit an official high school transcript in English. When evaluating your application for undergraduate admission, we are interested in understanding how you challenged yourself relative to the curriculum that was available at your school and the trends in your performance—especially your grades in math, science, and English.
  • Your completed coursework should include English Composition, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Chemistry and Physics. We also consider the GPA that is indicated on your high school transcript. We look for students in the top 25 percent of their class. For schools that don't use a ranking system, we consider a 3.0 GPA or higher to be equivalent.
